Playing Games

As you might expect from Project Blinkenlights, the Stereoscope interactive installation featured real time games that could be played on the facade of Toronto City Hall. Using your mobile phone, you could launch games on one of two top screens of the building depending on where you stood.

There were separate numbers for different games and for each of the two towers of the building. So by choosing the right number, you selected which game to play on which part of City Hall.

Playing games

Playing a game was as simple as calling the right number and then pressing the proper keys on your telephone keyboard to control the action. If you had trouble understanding how it worked, you could just listen to the voice on the other side explaining what to do.

Once you were done playing, you just hung up. The screen flipped back to normal and continued to display animations or other things.

Games and Numbers

Below you find a list of the games that could be played, sorted by the towers they were played on. The numbers are no longer active.

East Tower (bigger tower on your right) Invaders

+1 647 259‑8560 Aliens were approaching and you were the last man standing. You had to shoot those little bastards – however, the next time you called they were all over Stereoscope again. 4 moved left and 6 moved right, 5 fired. Mole Mole

+1 647 259‑8543 Your garden was full of moles and those little critters kept coming up at random. You had to grab your hammer and smash'em the moment they showed up. The field was divided in 3x3 fields. Pressing the proper number (1-9) on your keypad swung your tool. Breakout

+1 647 259‑8563 You had to clear the field of those blocks, making sure your paddle was properly positioned to bounce back the ball. 5 moved up and 8 moved down. West Tower (smaller tower on your left) Tetris

+1 647 258‑1674 You steered the falling blocks horizontally to position them properly, using 4 and 6 to move them to the left and right respectively. 5 rotated the piece and 8 dropped it immediately. Pong

+1 647 259‑8559 The classic Tennis game. It was you on the left against the computer on the right. 5 moved up and 8 moved down. Whoever reached 10 points first won. Snake

+1 647 259‑8557 You steered the little snake across the screen using 4 (left), 6 (right), 5 (down) and 2 (up), making it eat the little blinking dots and watching the snake grow.

The telephone numbers for the Stereoscope Games were also available as a vCard 3.0 file for easy importing into your phone.
